As a mental health counselor, my top priority is providing a therapeutic environment that is unpretentious and nonjudgmental. Human beings are notoriously flawed creatures, and being one myself, I recognize the collaborative power of unconditional positive regard. This is known as the “person-centered approach” to therapy, but it’s one I aim to uphold in all walks of life.
Therapy, like all forms of conversation, is a living organism: subject to change shape in response to it’s environment. My approach to counseling draws from a number of evidence-based modalities, such as CBT, DBT, and psychodynamic therapy. CBT seeks to identify and “de-program” negative thought-behavior patterns; DBT aims to reconcile (short-term) self-acceptance with (long-term) desire for change, and psychodynamic therapy explores how the “unconscious” mind can influence our waking thoughts and actions. The self-discovery journey can certainly feel daunting — which is why I’ll be there every step of the way, confronting the absurdities of the human condition with you.
There’s no doubt the world is an unpredictable and unjust place. Feelings of powerlessness can arise when we try to understand why bad things happen to good people (particularly when that person is us). But we make a grave error when we conclude that those feelings must be true. In reality, we have more agency and intrinsic potential than we’d ever imagined. The key to unlocking this is to reject fatalistic worldviews (i.e., victimhood), and embracing those with an internal locus of control.
Anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), relationship problems, and complex trauma are some of my primary areas of interest. If you think I might be the right person to help guide you on your journey, book a free consultation today!
